Movin’ and Improvin’: #CheckYourGirls

Melissa and Loralie have partnered with Advocate Condell Medical Center Centre Club to spend the next year working to achieve their health goals. They’ll be documenting their steps to get Movin’ and Improvin’ and be fit by 40. This is not a weight loss series, this is a journey towards health. Read the series introduction to learn more. Today we hear from Loralie…

Movin' and Improvin' with Advocate Condell Centre Club

Happy Birthday to me!  This month I hit the big 4-0.

(By the way, I didn’t get your greeting card in the mail, but I will continue to accept online gift cards through the end of the year.)

When Melissa and I embarked on our fitness journey with Advocate Condell Medical Center Centre Club, we made it our goal to be “Fit by 40.”

Here’s the thing, fitness while extremely important, is just one component of staying healthy.  October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and now that I am 40, it’s time to think about breast cancer screenings.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women with average risk (i.e., no history of breast cancer in their family) ages 40 to 44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screening with mammograms if they wish to do so.  Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year. Talk to your doctor to determine when you should begin screenings.

Are you nervous about having your first mammogram?  We want to help take the stigma away from routine screenings, so we’ve partnered with Advocate Condell Medical Center for an evening of fun, relaxation, pampering and indulgence all while raising awareness of early detection and prevention.

support your girls glam night out

TONIGHT, Friday, September 30th we are co-hosting a Glam Moms’ Night Out – join us to “Support Your Girls!”  Advance tickets are still available online or pay your $12 admission fee at the door (cash only.)  $10 from every ticket will be donated to The American Cancer Society.

You know what this means right?  That taking a night off without the kids for some grown-up time counts as good for your health!

The American Cancer Society also tells that we can reduce our risk though healthy food choices and getting regular physical activity.  Woohoo!  Thanks Centre Club for helping me tick that last one off my list.

If you’d like to go that extra mile this month, you can join Centre Club for their Pink Ribbon Run through the Mundelein Seminary grounds on Saturday, October 22, 2016.  Take a scenic one-mile walk or 5K run/walk to benefit Advocate Condell Medical Center Cancer Care Services.
