Halloween is now officially on the horizon, pumpkins are on the shelves at stores, and your kids have probably already decided on their costume.  If you are not already in the spooky spirit, there are only a few short weeks until Halloween to feel full on festive.  Luckily, Lake County has many events to help you feeling frightful. These events are for babies and children through their teen years, and we have rounded them up all in one big, killer list.

10 October, 6:00 p.m. Getting Excited about Science – Spooky Science!
 FREE {Libertyville} Registration Required. Performer Steve Belliveau uses magic, props, audience participation, and fun to make singing rods, color changing potions, smoke bubbles, expanding peeps, elephant toothpaste, and more! This interactive program showcases the weird and spooky side of science.

13 October, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Fall Festival and 500 Pumpkin Giveaway
FREE {Grayslake} The 4th annual fall festival will feature free pumpkins to the first 500 children, with a limit of one pumpkin per child while supplies last, as well as a large bouncy house and complimentary refreshments.

13 October 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Fall Fest & Trick or Treat
FREE {Zion} Event includes Trick or Treating at over 40 vendors (for kids ages 13 and under), bounce houses, face painting, Lake County Sheriff K-9 demos, games, pumpkin painting, food, raffles, and more.

13 October 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Trucks, Trunks, & Treats
{Vernon Hills} $3 per child, children younger than two are admitted for free. Come in your costumes and hop aboard community vehicles at this fun touch-a-truck event with a twist. Candy will be handed out at each truck.

13 October 3:00 – 8:00 p.m Haunted Trail and Bonfire
{Lindenhurst} Come out with your family and friends and join us for a ghoulishly good time. There is something for everyone at our Haunted Trail Family Fall Festival!

18 October 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Pumpkin Fest
{Grayslake} Cost: $8 before October 18th; $13 day of event. Adults enter for free. Halloween character path, games, hay rides, a costume contest, moon walks, and more will be available.

20 October, 9:30 a.m.- Halloween Fun with Minnie & Mickey Mouse
{Grayslake} $10 R / $13 NR / $5 for each additional sibling, Registration required. Mickey and Minnie Mouse are so excited to show off their Halloween costumes and read a story with you. Feel free to wear your costume and join us for a festive morning of crafts, singing, dancing, and laughing.

19 October, 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Halloween at the Y

FREE  {Highwood} Registration required. Get dressed up and join the Highwood Public Library for some Halloween fun!  Kids ages 3 through10 will participate in games, raffles, watch RC Juggles perform, and eat pizza.

20 October Monster Mash Bash
FREE {Antioch} You’ll enjoy a Monster Bash held near the AC Faire which is made for Halloween Fun!   Kids can enjoy Treat the Streets on Saturday (Noon to 2 p.m.) in Downtown Antioch and the Monster Bash (1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday) at the Bandshell. Plus our Annual Weiner Races and Pumpkin Roll.

20 October, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Great Pumpkin Celebration
FREE  {Round Lake} Approximately 20 area businesses will be on-site for safe, indoor trick-or-treating. In addition, there will be a other activities including face painting, carnival games, a bounce house– even an outdoor hayride and corn maze! For the youngest ones, a not-so-scary trick-or-treat walk will be available in the Children’s Neighborhood Museum.

20 October 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. Princess & Monsters Tea
{Gurnee} Reservations recommended for an afternoon Tea at the Chocolate Sanctuary. Adults $21, children are $12, includes drink and treats, special guests include a real princess and monster.

20 October, 3:30 p.m. Pumpkin Fest
FREE {Mundelein} RSVP preferred in order to ensure enough pumpkins. Participants will receive a free pumpkin to decorate or carve. A judge will award prizes in age categories to the best decoration. Light fall refreshments will be provided.

20 October 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Halloween Family Jam with Millie
{Lake Villa} Come in child friendly costumes and be ready to sing and dance at this free, family friendly event.

20 October 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Halloween at the Y!
{Lindenhurst} Annual free Halloween at the Y event includes a haunted house, games, face painting, children’s books for sale, refreshments, and bonfire.

FREE  {Gurnee} Halloween event featuring the Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown, Linus, and Snoopy from Peanuts!  Features free photo with the Peanuts characters each day of the event, as well as crafts, a special cookie craft on Halloween night from 5 to 7 p.m., a pumpkin toss to win a prize on Saturdays, Sundays, and Halloween Night.  Don’t miss Trick or Treating and the Costume Parade on Wednesday, October 31 only.

21 October 5:00 p.m., Halloween Battle Cupcakes
{Bannockburn}Everyone’s favorite sweet escape takes on a frightful twist as we put your culinary creativity to the test. We’ll teach you the techniques to make melt-in-your-mouth cupcakes, but it’s up to you to invent your own version of this traditional sweet using our tasty array of Halloween-inspired decorations, flavors and mix-ins. Each cupcake becomes a masterpiece in the making, complete with fondant decorating, leaving all budding chefs cheering for more! FREE {Lake Forest} Event features: costume contest for kids of all ages,  balloon sculptors, face painting, balloon characters, stilt walker, Halloween photo booth, live DJ turning the tunes, and trick or treating.

More than 1,000 hand-carved pumpkin, some as large as 150 pound, will light up the night at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns is the only event of its kind in the Chicago area.

FREE {Mundelein} Candy and treats are provided by local businesses. Other activities include games and prizes, story telling, and visits by familiar costumed characters. Event will feature local sponsor giveaways. Tractor pulled wagon rides are provided by Lake County volunteer tractor and wagon enthusiasts. This event is held rain or shine.

27 October 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. Kids’ Fun Nite Halloween Party
 {Lake Zurich} An evening of fun at LZMA includes pizza, a haunted obstacle course, games, crafts, and a movie. No experience required. Participants are encouraged but not required to dress up. For ages 4 to 12, cost is $30 and registration is required before October 24.

19 & 20  October Halloween Hikes
{Riverwoods} For children over age four. Cost:  $9 residents/$11 non-residents. Reservations required. Bring your family to this long standing tradition at Ryerson Woods and enjoy an evening on a guided walk along a candlelit trail. The hour-long hike makes stops along the trail to watch nature-themed skits. This program isn’t scary, so even preschoolers will have fun.

12 October 6:30 p.m. – Halloween Hayride & Movie
{Highland Park} $5 a ride. Grab your costume and meet us at the Highland Park Country Club property for a night of goblins, ghosts, and ghouls! Board the hayride and settle in for a haunting story after dark, then cozy up to the fire and watch Halloween classic ‘Hocus Pocus’ (PG) on the big screen (movie starts at 6:45pm)!

FREE   {Round Lake} Come learn makeup techniques straight from the haunted house to be able to turn yourself into a zombie.

24 October 4:00 p.m.  – DIY Tweens – Beaded Ghosts

Children ages 10 to 14 are invited to use their imaginations, problem solving skills, and creativity to explore different materials and tools as they learn new techniques to create something new! Materials will be provided. Dress for mess. Instruction based program. Please be on time. Must be at least 10 years of age.

{Mundelein} $10 in advance, $15 day of program. If the threat of a Zombie Apocalypse brings chills to your body, we have the perfect workout for you! Work on agility, strength, and speed during this all level interval workout. Get ready to battle the walking dead this Halloween season. You never know when the alarm will sound and you will need to put your skills to the test. Festive clothing is suggested, but not required. Just be ready to sweat!

27 October 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Meet & Greet with Svengoolie
{Volo} Svengoolie returns once again to the Volo Auto Museum with meeting and greeting museum guests. Guests to the museum will have the chance to pose for a picture with Svengoolie and get an autograph at no extra charge. His appearance will be from 12 to 2 p.m..

The scariest abodes in the county, visit them before they disappear!

1 September – 31 October 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily Goebbert’s Pumpkin Patch
{Barrington and Hampshire} Free with standard farmyard admission. Take a walk through our haunted house and experience the twist and turns, be ready for some thrills and chills. (Appropriate for school-aged children.)

15 September – 31 October Six Flags Fright Fest
{Gurnee} Standard admission rates apply. All areas of the park are not recommended for young children or those who scare easily, especially after 6:00 p.m. If you have not yet taken your kids to Fright Fest, you must! We love Fright Fest. The whole park turns into a Halloween paradise in the day and a giant haunted house with characters jumping out at you at night. In addition Six Flags, has three haunted houses in the park for an additional charge.

16 September- 3 November Dungeon of Doom Haunted House
{Zion} Cost: $30 per person. Admission for youth ages 11 and older with parents; youth age 13 and older are allowed without an adult.
Come check out one of the scariest haunted houses in the Chicagoland area.  It prides itself on being the only 60-minute long haunted house in a 300 mile radius. Because of how scary this house is, it is up to parental discretion whether their child is mature enough to enter. It is recommended for youth age 13 and over.

Best Halloween House Displays

October,  Halloween Town
821 Hartley Dr., Algonquin
This interactive haunted outdoor display is located in Algonquin during the month of October. Halloween Town was first created in 2006 by homeowner Jim Haupert, starting with a tiny graveyard and a few skeleton lights. Kids enjoyed the display while parents would photograph them in the graveyard on Halloween night. Every year the display has grown larger with lights, fog, and ghouls. The display is visable during daytime hours, but the full effects are only visible at night.

FREE {Fox Lake} Throughout the month of October, we’ll be spotlighting the works of Sir Alfred Hitchcock. Enjoy popcorn and classic titles by the “Master of Suspense.”

 {Riverwoods} Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein by attending the Theatre-Hikes performance at Brushwood Center! Audience members will travel in and around the Brushwood house with the cast of this avant-garde adaptation, exploring the story through Dr. Frankenstein’s distorted memories and the personal accounts of Frankenstein’s monster.  $20/adult, children admitted for free w/ ticket-holding adult. Run time is about 2-2.5 hours. May not be appropriate for families with very young children.
