Little McHenry County: Groundhog Day at Woodstock Square {2017}

Little Lake County parents are active, mobile and always seeking adventure! Sometimes we even traverse outside of our fair county to find family entertainment beyond our borders. Due to popular reader demand, we introduce “Little McHenry County,” a monthly column dedicated to finding fun with our neighbors to the west, written by McHenry County Moms in the know. Explore and enjoy!

Groundhog Day at Woodstock Square

When it comes to Groundhog Day, other than Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania there is no more famous place than Woodstock Square in Woodstock, Illinois. Unless you’ve been living under a rock (or a tree stump) Woodstock was the town square backdrop for the movie Groundhog Day featuring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell.

For five, event-filled days, Woodstock comes alive with an electric buzz of Groundhog fever. The whole town comes alive with special Groundhog-themed events. One of our favorite things to do was to walk the town and spot all of the filming sites. There are guided movie walking tours, but we opted to take a tour on our own.

The Woodstock Theatre has a free annual showing of the movie Groundhog Day. The movie’s soundtrack plays in the Gazebo (Gobblers Knob) in the middle of the square, so there are plenty of opportunities to recreate the dance scene. We may or may not have done just that.
