Give Back: Helping your Community as a Family

families giving back to their community

This time of year we are reminded of all the things we have to be grateful for, and many of us experience a resurgence in the spirit of giving, volunteering & the like.  This is especially true for me in 2012.  I consider myself to be very aware of my good fortune and try not to take things like my kids health, full refrigerator, or warm home for granted.  For some reason I am more acutely aware of the misfortunes of others this holiday season.  Because of this, I am committing to post at least once a week to the “Donate” and  (new!) “Volunteer” sections of Little Lake County between now and Christmas.  I hope that you enjoy these posts and find them inspiring.

  • Given that Little Lake County was created for kids and is written by mom’s, I thought it would be fitting that children be recipients of my first giving post.  LLC’s very own Becky Honaker is collecting preemie hats for children in Lake Forest Hospital’s NICU.  Families of premature babies are often unexpectedly stuck in the hospital without some of the most basic comforts.  Something as simple as a hat for their little one can make the “cold” hospital environment a little bit warmer.  Becky collects hats through her KnitsBitsy business, along with her March of Dimes team “Jackson’s Pack”.  If you would like to donate or want more information, please email Becky: knitsybitsy78@gmail.com
  • Ela Area Library District as well as the Fox Lake Library District both are collecting mittens, gloves, scarves, and hats (new) on their Mitten Trees. Both libraries will be distributing the items through local charities to spread warmth during this holiday season. Collection ends January 2 in Fox Lake and January 4 at Ela.
  • The Lake County Farm Bureau is collecting Toys for Tots and Winter Coats through December 10th. New unwrapped children’s toys and new or slightly used coats can be dropped off at the Farm Bureau Office, 70 US Hwy 45, Grayslake
  • Toys for Tots: May local places are collecting new unwrapped toys for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots collection including Gurnee Mills. See the Toys for Tots website for all locations .

Today is a great day to get started as its the first annual Giving Tuesday!

We’d love to hear about your personal experiences with anything that we post about if you give them a try.  Happy holidays!
