The Magic of the Nutcracker produced by Dancenter North is  known as the “largest and most lavish version of the holiday ballet in Lake County,” and for good reason.  Whether you attend a performance at Libertyville High School or at the historic Genesee Theatre in Waukegan, you and your family will fall under the spell of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, the Mouse King, and the Nutcracker Prince.

Dancenter North’s elaborate sets and costumes are rich in sumptuous detail.  Audiences are effortlessly transported from a late 19th-century European parlor decked out in holiday cheer to the whimsical and candy-coated world of the Kingdom of Sweets.

For those unfamiliar with this performance, The Magic of the Nutcracker weaves the tale of Clara and her treasured Nutcracker on the night of Christmas Eve.  The story is told through dance and music, so younger children should be forewarned that there is no dialogue.

Full-length performances consist of two acts and an intermission, while Clara’s Dream is a shortened presentation (60 minutes) designed specifically for preschoolers.  The shorter performance time easily holds the attention of a young child and can be appreciated by adults and children of all ages who may not have the stamina for a two-act ballet.  My own children attended for the first time last year, and at ages 5 and 7, we felt it was the perfect introduction for them.

School groups can enjoy a special performance on Friday, December 9th at 10:00 a.m. at the Genesee Theatre.  Melissa attended a school show and enjoyed listening to the Director introduce the dancers during intermission.  It was a lovely way to get to know the dancers and their personal stories, particularly if you have a child with dance aspirations.
