Condell Community Health Fair
To celebrate American Heart Month, Advocate Condell wants to help people make healthy choices and treat, manage or prevent heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, and the cause of death of 1 in 4 deaths. Heart disease is something that I have always been aware of because I have a family history of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, artery disease, heart attack and stroke. However this past November it went from something in the back of my mind to something I now have to really look at and address. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol in November. My cholesterol (overall) was 243,  desirable is less than 200. So I have a bit of work to do.

For the next year, I will be working with Centre Club to take advantage of both the fitness services and health information events like these to work toward getting those numbers down to a healthy level.  On Monday, I visited the Libertyvillle location for their fair. I’m proof that heart healthy isn’t something you should wait until you are “older” to consider. While at that fair, I was able to get a rapid cholesterol test, blood pressure reading, and discuss heart health with a professional. I learned that my numbers are down (238!) and that while I was doing really well by reducing saturated fat and animal products, there was something I am terrible at that contributes to high cholesterol….getting 7-8 hours of sleep!

While there I was also able to get a fitness assessment to get my weight (down 2 pounds from last week!) and body fat (above average)  as well as a flexibility test.  Now a flexibility test may feel like a throwback to the presidential testing you did in school, but it’s important especially as the body ages. Decreased flexibility leads to increased chance of injury, as well as increased lower back pain.

Screenings that will be available (for free) include:

  • know your numbers for HDL, LDL and triglycerides (cholesterol) and glucose levels (will need an 8-12 hour fast)
  • orthopedic booths with gait and balance screenings
  • weight management and a registered dietitian
  • chair massages provided by certified therapists

Centre Club trainers will also be giving body fat and flexibility assessments. There will also be tours, goody bags and raffle prizes. You don’t need to be a member to stop by!
