Thanksgiving doesn’t have to be a celebration of only food and gluttony, there are lots of events where you and your family can get out and get active together! Make this the year you start a new tradition and try out one of these family friendly events that will get you moving before you start chewing!
Many of the events require pre-registration, although some races do have morning of availability. Please be sure to check the requirements before heading to the event.
Saturday November 16
Spot Shot Turkey Shootout, Cooper Middle School, Buffalo Grove
Children and their parents can have some Thanksgiving fun by participating in the Buffalo Grove Park District’s Spot Shot Turkey Shootout competition. This is a fun event that gives children and their parents a chance to showcase their shooting skills from various spots placed around the basketball court. All participants will receive an event t-shirt and the winner of each division will receive a frozen turkey to enjoy on the holiday. Turkey Shoot Out, Takiff Center Gym, Glencoe
Parents and kids will team up to compete in the ultimate Thanksgiving free throw competition. Each participant will shoot ten free throws and the best total combined score in each age division will be declared the winner. Winners will receive a Thanksgiving turkey and champion t-shirt! Turkey Trot Tournament, Deer Creek Courts, Highland Park
For children ages 8-15 come put your skills to the test in a friendly environment. Singles and Doubles may be played based on the number of entries. Contact the highland Park Park District for more information.
Turkey Trot, Belivedere Park, Waukegan
All Ages are invited to come out to this community event where the registration fee is just 2 cans of non-perishable food for the food drive! Please contact the Waukegan Park District at 847-360-4700 for more information.
Sunday November 17
Turkey Shoot, Sullivan Community Center, Vernon Hills
Don’t go to the store to pick out your Thanksgiving turkey too soon! Instead, head to the “fowl” line and shoot free throws at the Vernon Hills Park District Turkey Shoot! One adult and one child per team. Teams will be grouped by child’s age. Each competitor will take 10 shots from the free throw line. The combined number of baskets will be the team’s score. Highest scoring team in each age category will win free turkeys! Contact the Park District to register and for more information.
Sunday November 24
Grayslake Booster 5K turkey Trot, Grayslake Central High School
Join us for a community run starting and ending at the football stadium. All Ages are welcome! Long sleeve t-shirts will be given to the first 250 registrants. All proceeds support the Grayslake Central Boosters and the programs they fun dfor school sports teams. See website for more information and to register.
Thanksgiving Nature Scavenger Hunt, Fox River Forest Preserve, Port Barrington
Education and fun abound when you search for clues about the gifts we recieve from nature. Afterward enjoy a hot beverage around a bonfire. Activity is self-paced. Registration is recomended See the Lake County Forest Preserve District website for more information.
Thursday November 28 (Thanksgiving Day)
20th Annual Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot, Gurnee Old Grand Ave Fire Station
Before you sit down to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast with your family and friends, come out and join your neighbors at the 20th annual Jon Callaghan Memorial Turkey Trot. T-shirts are provided to the first 350 paid participants to check-in on race day and refreshments we provided in the Gurnee Community Church hall after the event. North Shore Turkey Trot 5K and 10K, Downtown Highland Park
Run your Turkey Trot then head home to relax in your super comfy North Shore Turkey Trot fleece pajama pants. Second helpings are encouraged when you wear these unisex sized PJ pants! See the website for more information and to register.
6th Annual Long Grove Turkey Trot, 5K, 8K and Tiny Trot
Come Thanksgiving morning and run the downtown historic streets of Long Grove finishing under the famous covered bridge! The diverse and very beautiful course is USATF certified. Wake up, have fun with family and friends while working up a big appetite for your Thanksgiving turkey. This event is for everyone: walkers and runners, young and old.
