Summer is a great time to take a family outing and enjoy a children’s theater production. Lake County is home to some great local groups. Summer is also a great time to see some youth theater production as there are many classes and camps that put on single night or weekend performances. Here is what we have seen lined up for this summer:

A special one-hour presentation of the story of a wooden puppet that is magically given the gift of animation.  From a candy island to the belly of a whale, this new musical spin on the classic tale is sure to dazzle and delight audiences of all ages! This is a special one-hour presentation for kids (and parents) of all ages, followed by question & answer session with the cast.

Beauty and the Beast

Tickets are $10, $5 for the lawn Gates open at 10:00 a.m. show starts at 11:oo a.m.
Established in 1970, Opera for the Young (OFtY) brings live, professional opera to 200 elementary schools across the Upper Midwest annually with Fall and Spring tours reaching 75,000 children. Students appear onstage in chorus and cameo roles, performing for their peers right alongside OFtY’s professional artists. All productions are fully staged, sung in English and adapted especially for kids.

Alice in Wonderland

August 15-16 Waukegan Harbor Fest
Presented by Three Brothers Theatre. Alice goes on an adventure down the rabbit hole in this classic tale adapted for young theater goers.  Join her as she encounters the Mad Hatter, the Queen of Hearts, and the ever grinning Cheshire Cat in the hope of finding a way back home.  Help us celebrate the 150th year anniversary of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland!

August 15 and 16 at Waukegan Harbor Arts Festival
Presented by Three Brothers Theatre. Three Brothers applies their signature mash-up storytelling style to the Greek Myths! Our actors transform themselves into Hercules, Perseus, and Odysseus and other classic Greek characters. There will be comedy, action, romance and FUN!  AND…You might just learn something about Greek Mythology. The play written is for young audiences, but guaranteed to entertain the entire family.

As you Like It

While not specifically a children’s performance the locations and price point make this show a great introduction to Shakespeare for school age kids. This summer the play shall be Shakespeare’s As You Like It and will be performed for the public at outdoor venues across Lake County starting July 23 at the Brushwood Center in Ryerson Woods.  The most musical of Shakespeare’s plays, As You Like It features a number of songs which highlight the pastoral atmosphere and the changing of the seasons.  Tickets are $15 to the general public, the Prairie Crossing show list children 7 and under free. Travel chairs and/or blankets for seating suggested. Please feel free to bring your own picnic dinner and bottle of wine to share with friends age 21 or older.

Jungle Book

The Wizard of Oz

Featuring all your favorite songs from the classic film version of the same name, this very special show will be a treat for the whole family.  Tickets for adults and children ages 12 and up are $17 in advance or $20 at the door.
