Welcome to Mompreneur Monday, where we introduce you to mom-based businesses in Lake County. This month it’s our pleasure to introduce you to The Science Lady, Jennifer Boller, of The Science Party.
Jen B, The Science lady is a Lake County native. Like many of us, she spent a few years living in Chicago before she settled down in Libertyville with her husband Jason, to raise their family. She has 3 kids: Brooke (7), Jack (5), and newborn Luke, and a dog named Brody.
Is there a hidden gem in your town, or local activity that you enjoy?
We love Libertyville! There are so many fun family and adult things to do. In the summer we love Adler pool, and my daughter has done the swim team for 2 years now. My husband and I love date night at The Firkin or many other restaurants in ‘the Ville’. The kids love Mickey Finns.
What was the catalyst for starting your business?
I’ve been a high school chemistry/science teacher for the past 14+ years. I was brainstorming last fall some ideas of how to change things up, while creating a business, and doing something for my own kids’ age and I thought of The Science Party. I am keeping my day job as a teacher, but this has worked out great as a summer job and we are adding fall/winter/spring classes- so we are growing! I started out thinking this would be mainly a birthday party company, but then decided to expand and offer classes through the Libertyville Park District. That has been a great expansion and I really love doing the classes.
What is the biggest challenge you face in finding a work/life balance?
I was at a point where I thought I would have more time to devote to starting a business, then pregnancy with Luke slowed me down a lot, and now having a newborn has also slowed me! But I’m hoping to keep the business going and see where it leads me.
What makes your business unique?
I think there are quite a few opportunities for kids to do sports, arts, and music through our park district and other venues, but there weren’t any science opportunities that I was aware of, so hopefully this is filling a need and desire within the community. Over the summer, I held 6 summer science classes and by the end they were completely filled to capacity. I’m hoping the word gets out again next summer and hoping to expand to other park districts besides Libertyville. I am launching my first classes in Vernon Hills this winter, so I’m looking forward to that as well.
What is the most important thing you want people to know about you or your business?
I really like science and I think kids love doing science! I am not a ‘crafty’ person, but this is something I feel I can offer to my own kids and kids in the community. It’s kind of like the obvious way for me get involved with my kids’ education and at their schools, just wish I would have thought of it sooner!
Connect with the Science Party on Facebook or check her website as her business grows. She hopes to offer new classes next summer.
