We’ve gathered up the holiday shows — some seasonal, some not — performed by kids and professionals in and around Lake County. Many shows will feature special times over winter break so you can find the perfect time to enjoy as a family or plan to give tickets as a gift.

Marriott Theatre, Ten Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire
Note this is a main stage production suitable for school age children, but not a children’s theatre production. Running time is 2.5 hours with a 15-minute intermission.
Inspired by the real-life New York City Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when the newspaper publishing titans raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to fight them.

Marriott Theatre, Ten Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire
Marriott Children’s Theatre productions are one-hour in length followed by a question and answer session with the cast. Come visit this colorful kingdom where the vengeful sorceress Magenta places a wicked curse on the beautiful Princess Amber. Only a kiss from her one true love can unlock the spell and wake this Sleeping Beauty. Will Prince Hunter overcome his fears as he scales the mountains, sails the dark sea and battles the dragon to prove his love? Don’t miss out on this captivating and colorful, musical fairy tale. Getting to Know…Oklahoma

Tickets: $10 in advance $13 at the door
Ivy Hall School, 1072 Ivy Hall Lane, Buffalo Grove
Performed by Big Deal Productions Children’s Theatre
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s first collaboration, Oklahoma is a timeless tale, set in a Western Indian territory, just after the turn of the century. Featuring classical musical theater songs the show will be a hit for the whole family.

Humbug by John Wooten is a re-telling of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol with a modern twist. Humbug follows the story of Elanor Scrooge, a ruthlessly ambitious Wall Street Executive who has an aversion to Christmas and an insatiable appetite for power. Adult price includes a hand-painted bowl and each event will benefit the Holy Family Food Pantry.

Scrooge and the Ghostly Spirits

This world-premiere holiday musical is based on Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. The family favorite brings all your most cherished characters and themes to life through an original score and the magic of song and dance. Bring the family to Citadel Theatre in Chicago’s Lake Forest neighborhood for a show that’ll warm your heart and put you in a holiday frame of mind. Runs 1 hour and 45 minutes with no intermission. The story of Rapunzel a tangled fairy tale. When she was a child, Rapunzel was locked in a tall tower by Witch Gothal. The tower has a window but no doors. There is no way out and poor Rapunzel is trapped. She would give anything to be able to walk through the forest around her tower and experience the real world. Isn’t there anyone who can help Rapunzel escape her tower prison?


A Christmas Carol
November 29 – December 27

Celebrate the holiday with Ebenezer Scrooge and the Cratchit family. Scrooge’s only concern is with making money, no matter the cost to those around him. He doesn’t even want his loyal employee Bob Cratchit to take the day off for Christmas and turns down his nephew’s invitation to join his family for Christmas Dinner. Scrooge is visited on Christmas Eve by three magical spirits who take him on a journey through his painful past, gloomy present, and possibly fatal future as he learns how his actions have affected those around him.
