Halloween isn’t just about trick-or-treating.  There are an entire month’s worth of family friendly events right here in Lake County to get everyone into the spooky spirit.  Whether your kids are haunted house and scary movie-loving tweens, or preschoolers who would prefer a not-so-scary story time at the local library, or school age kids who enjoy something in between, Lake County has something for the whole family to enjoy.

6-8 October  The Great Highwood Pumpkin Festival
Downtown Highwood
This festival kicks off with the world’s largest pumpkin carving celebration to help the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Many fun activities include a pie eating contest, jack-o-lantern light show, rides, all you can carve pumpkin stations and much more. This is very close to the Metra Station, so why not take the train and have a fun fall day! See Jen’s story for tips for attending.

7 October, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Fall Festival and 500 Pumpkin Giveaway
Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Star Homes, Grayslake
FREE. Join us for a fun family event. The first 500 children to visit will receive one free pumpkin. Children can play in two bounce houses, and enjoy free donuts and apple cider, while supplies last, one per person.

7 October, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Fall Festival
Veteran’s Park, Island Lake
FREE.  There will be free hayrides for all and free crafts for the children. Guess the weight of the large pumpkin and win the pumpkin. Children in Halloween costumes will be entered into a contest with prizes for the top three costumes. For $3, children will be able to pick a pumpkin right off the vine and decorate it. Ice cream sundaes with all the toppings will cost $1 each.

7 October, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Haunted Halls — A Villian Halloween Party
Park School, Round Lake
Registration required. Cost: $10 for kids 3-10 and under; $15 for all others.
Brave a trip through the Haunted Halls for a wicked night out! We will party the night away with your favorite villains. Come eat, drink, and be evil! There will be a fangtastic dessert bar, cauldrons of beverages and undead entertainment! This event is fun for the whole family so bring all of your ghouls and boys.

18 October, 6:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m. Trick or Treat Halloween Magic & Puppet Show with Mister Kipley
Antioch Public Library District, Antioch
Registration Required.
FREE. Treat yourself to this hilarious, not-too-scary Halloween-themed magic and interactive puppet show. Help Grunkelina the Witch find the perfect feline friend. Meet “Boo” the baby ghost and watch her soar over your head. Also making an appearance are Frankenstein, Dracula, and “Skelly Bones” the Skeleton.

Cost: $8 before October 18th; $13 day of event. Adults enter for FREE.
The Grayslake Park District hosts this event for the 10th year which includes a moonwalk, Halloween character path, games, a costume contest and a giant slide.

Pre-Register: $10/child and $5/adult; Day of: $15/child and $5/adult.  Children younger than two are FREE!
Join us for a SPOOKTACULAR night of fun! We’ll have tons of family friendly activities like a petting zoo, pony rides, a haunted house, costume party, inflatables, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

21 October 1:00 p.m. Sunburst Pageant and Costume Contest
Ice House Mall & Village Shops, 200 Applebee St., Barrington
Cost: $50 minimum entry fee.
Join Sunburst Pageant at the Ice House Mall for a pageant and costume contest for children and adults ages newborn – 27. A winner will be chosen in each age group for the Baby Contest, Miss Pageant and Costume Contest. There will be a runner-up chosen in the pageant category. Entry forms for the pageant are available at all Ice House Mall stores and online at www.sunburstbeauty.com.

21 October, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Haunted Halloween
National Museum of the American Sailor, Building 42, 610 Farragut Ave., Great Lakes
FREE. At the Halloween celebration, children will have an opportunity to play exciting games, visit different Halloween craft stations, and enjoy Halloween-themed entertainment. Younger visitors will also have the opportunity to enter in our costume contest, featuring two groups (ages 10 and younger and 11 and older). Prizes will be awarded in each group for the cutest, scariest, and most original costumes.

21 October, 1:30 p.m. Pumpkin Fest
Community Protestant Church, Mundelein
RSVP Preferred in order to ensure enough pumpkins
FREE. Participants will receive a free pumpkin to decorate or carve. A judge will award prizes to the best in the decorating contest in categories by age. A face painter will be on site for those who’d like a little decoration themselves and light fall refreshments will be provided.This event is our offering to the community, free of charge.

Reservations Required
Reservations are required at this annual storytelling event at the Volo Bog State Natural Area.  Snuggle under blankets in the cool air, while telling ghost stories. Come early to have a guided tour of the haunted woods.  Stories are geared for ages five and older for the first reading, and age 10 and older for the second reading.

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble! Join us at your own risk for this fabulous freaky Friday tweens ONLY event! Monsters will be mashing to the beats of The Great Boodini DJ, goblins will be feasting on tons of pizza and fairies will be playing tons of tricky games with attendees! Costumes are a must to enter the contest to win prizes.

9 October. 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Costume Construction Meet Up 
Indian Trail Library District, Wheeling
Registration Required.
FREE.Youth ages 14 and older can pack up a sewing machine, fabric and supplies, and join fellow enthusiasts to get a jump-start on a Halloween costume. Registration Required and space is limited, donation of $50 is required.
Ages (8-18) are welcomed to come and show off their baking & decorating skills! All bakers MUST come in a costume. The event will start at 9:00 am, judging will begin at 12 noon! The winning team will advance at no extra charge to the Holiday Cupcake Wars! (date to be decided)

24 October. 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Spooky Scavenger Hunt 
Indian Trail Library District, Wheeling
FREE, but tickets required. Free tickets will be distributed 30 minutes before the event.
Youth ages nine through fifth grade can join in a fun (and not too spooky) scavenger hunt throughout the library.  Teams will test their library knowledge and decoding skills to win fun prizes.

FREETwo parts broken toy, one part glue, and five parts wackiness. That’s the recipe for creating a Frankentoy. We will bring broken toys back to life by splicing them together to form something crazy. The Library will supply some broken toys, but feel free to bring your own.

27 October, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Teen Zone: Nerf Halloween Party

Cost: $5; additional fee for some activities and food.
Come and enjoy haunted spectacles at Phantom Manor. Food trucks will be on site serving spooky food and craft beer. Donate $1 to the SMILE foundation, and receive marshmallows to roast by the bonfire. Not recommended for kids under age eight.

FREE. Svengoolie will be making his way to the Volo Auto Museum once again for the annual meet and greet. Guests will be allowed one autograph and one photo per person or group from our photographer. No personal cameras will be allowed. The meet and greet is free, but normal museum admission rates apply.

FREE. Kick off International Games Week with a chomping round of Hungry Hungry Zombies. Use scooter boards and laundry baskets in an upcycled, plastic ball-gathering, retro game of fun. Haunted Houses in Lake County

Take a walk through our Haunted House and experience the twist and turns, be ready for some thrills and chills. (Appropriate for school-aged children.)

16 September – 31 October Six Flags Fright Fest

All areas of the park are not recommended for young children or those who scare easily, especially after 6:00 p.m. If you have not yet taken your kids to Fright Fest, DO IT! We love Fright Fest. The whole park turns into a Halloween paradise in the day and a giant haunted house  with characters jumping out at you at night. In addition Six Flags, has two haunted houses in the park for an additional charge.

22 September- 4 November Dungeon of Doom Haunted House
Dungeon of Doom, Zion
Cost: $25 per person.
Admission for youth ages 11 and older with parents; youth age 13 and older are allowed without an adult.
Come check out one of the scariest haunted houses in the Chicagoland area.  It prides itself on being the only 60-minute long haunted house in a 300 mile radius. Because of how scary this house is, it is up to parental discretion whether their child is mature enough to enter. It is recommended for youth age 13 and over.

1 October – 31 October Halloween Town
821 Hartley Dr., Algonquin
FREE. This interactive haunted outdoor display is located in Algonquin during the month of October. Halloween Town was first created in 2006 by homeowner Jim Haupert, starting with a tiny graveyard and a few skeleton lights. Kids enjoyed the display while parents would photograph them in the graveyard on Halloween night. Every year the display has grown larger with lights, fog and ghouls. The display is viewable during daytime hours, but the full effects are only visible at night. 

7 October – Halloween, Germann Lights

Tune to 87.9 FM to listen to the music!! Before, during, or after the show they will be accepting food donations for the Northern Illinois Food Bank. Any non-perishable food items can be dropped off in a box in their yard right by the donation sign.

26 October Halloween Festive House Contest
Gurnee
FREE 
Show your spirit by entering our Halloween House Decorating Contest. Use lights, sound, live actors,animation and LOTS of imagination to decorate your own home. Judging is at 4:00 p.m. on October 26th. Don’t want to enter? Drive around Gurnee and admire all of the spooky houses.

Come and enjoy haunted spectacles at Phantom Manor. Food trucks will be on site serving spooky food and craft beer. Donate $1 to the SMILE foundation and receive marshmallows to roast by the bonfire. Not recommended for kids under age eight years of age.

14 October, 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Haunted Trail and Bonfire
Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area, 21950 N. Riverwoods Rd., Deerfield
FREE.  Start off with a wagon ride through McDonald Woods, then stroll over to the costume contest at the Cornstalk Stage. After the costume contest enjoy the amazing FREE performers at our Cornstalk Stage. If your still searching for that perfect pumpkin-check out the Millburn Tree Farm — they always bring a great selection. Bring your appetite, the Witches’ Kitchen will be grilling up some yummy treats, and make sure you save room for a giant Halloween sugar cookie — they’re always a hit! The little ones will enjoy our inflatable pumpkin moonwalk and pirate ship, kids’ game tent, face painter, and the Happy Ghosts straw maze, while the brave ones can walk through the trail if they dare. What lurks among the trees? There will be 10 mortifying scenes with unnatural creatures awaiting to eagerly quench their undying thirst for your screams! At dusk the Lake Villa Fire Department will start the bonfire and we will serve FREE apple cider heated in a cauldron.

20 & 21 October Halloween Hikes
Ryerson Woods, Riverwoods
For children over age four.
Cost:  $9 residents/$11 non-residents
Reservations Required.
Bring your family to this long-standing tradition at Ryerson Woods and enjoy an evening on a guided walk along a candlelit trail. The hour-long hike makes stops along the trail to watch nature-themed skits. At the end of the hike you will be treated to cider and donuts in front of a fire in a log cabin. This program isn’t scary, so even preschoolers will have fun. 90 minute event. One hour hikes begin every 30 minutes from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Total distance walked is about 1.5 miles.

This evening event with jack-o-lanterns carved by artists, as well as a trail and Halloween themed food is bound to get you in the fall spirit. More than 1,000 hand-carved pumpkins—some as large as 150 pounds—will light up the night at the Chicago Botanic Garden. Night of 1,000 Jack-o’-Lanterns is the only event of its kind in the Chicago area.
