Children with special needs don’t need to miss out on regular fun and open play. We’ve rounded up this month’s events for families and children with special needs. Unless otherwise stated, all events require preregistration. See the event listings for more information and to register.

Weekly Events for Children with Special Needs:

Special Olympics Gymnastics Team
The GymSpot Champions
GymSpot in Mundelein, 915 Tower Rd., Mundelein
The GymSpot is looking for children of all ages to join their Special Olympics Team. Practice is on Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and all ages and abilities are welcome. Contact the GymSpot at (847) 949-7768 for more information and to register.

Friday Night Dance Party
Every Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Denise Sabala Dance Studios, 560 W. Main St., Lake Zurich
This 45-minute class is catered to special needs students. Explore your body’s space around you through rhythm, music, socialization and dancing.

Open Play
Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm St., McHenry
Families and their friends are invited to the playhouse for playtime. Open play helps promote positive beginnings for new families with a child with Down syndrome, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends, and provides support and networking for families. Come ready for fun and a crazy good time! Open to families with children of all ages and their friends.

ASL Storytime & Activities

Barnes & Noble Hawthorn, 720 Hawthorne Center, Vernon Hills
Join us on Saturday, February 10th at 10am for a special ASL Storytime, followed by crafts and activities.

Moms of Kids with Special Needs
10 February, 
 10:30 a.m. 
The Barre Code, 850 N Milwaukee Ave #200, Vernon Hills
$10 at the door
We will be bringing these amazing women together for a Barre class hosted by The Barre Code Vernon Hills and to connect with each other after class with bagels and mimosas. Spread the word and sign up by emailing vernonhills@thebarrecode.com.

Playing with all Five Senses Playdate
 February 9:30 – 11:00 a.m.
Cook Memorial Public Library District – Aspen Drive , Vernon Hills
Babies and toddlers learn about the world through their senses. Homemade sensory toys you can try out with your child will be provided. Staff from the Lake County Department of Health’s Early Intervention program will be available to answer questions about developmental milestones and their early intervention program. Drop in

Sensory Storytime

*Registration Required* Join us for an inclusive and interactive storytime filled with stories, songs, sensory play, and socialization! Children of all abilities with their siblings and caregivers are welcome. Please let us know if any accommodations are required.

Everyone at Play

This special morning event offers free admission for families with children with special needs to explore the Museum exhibits in a controlled, quieter environment. Registration required, visit www.kcmgc.org/eap.

Sense-Sational Swim
18 February 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Bernard Weinger JCC, 300 Revere Dr., Northbrook
Join Keshet and JCC Chicago for a special sensory-friendly, open swim opportunity. A lifeguard will be present for this family swim at the Bernard Weinger JCC pool. Cost is $20

 Down Syndrome Developmental Council (DDC) Monthly Playgroup
20 February , 6:00 p.m. 
15 Commerce Drive, Suite 116, Grayslake
All family members are invited for an interactive group play therapy session. The session is led by a developmental therapist and hosted by various DDC parents, and the event includes dinner. Special Needs Night

Join us on February 22, from 5:00pm-7:00pm for a Bella’s Bouncies experience tailored to you and your special needs child! Bella’s Bouncies works hard to provide a safe and fun enviroment for all children.
Special Storytime
25 February  2:00 p.m. 
Lake Forest Library , 360 E Deerpath Rd ., Lake Forest
Take part in an interactive storytime featuring stories, songs, and activities. Perfect for children who have difficulty sitting still during a traditional  storytime or have special needs.
