Children with special needs don’t need to miss out on regular fun and open play. We’ve rounded up this month’s events for families and children with special needs. Unless otherwise stated, all events require preregistration. See the event listings for more information and to register.

February Special Needs Calendar

Weekly Events for Children with Special Needs:

Friday Night Dance Party
Every Friday, 6:30 p.m.

Denise Sabala Dance Studios, 560 W. Main St., Lake Zurich
This 45-minute class is catered to special needs students. Explore your body’s space around you through rhythm, music, socialization and dancing.

Open Play
Every Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
GiGi’s Playhouse, 5404 W. Elm St., McHenry
Families and their friends are invited to the playhouse for playtime. Open play helps promote positive beginnings for new families with a child with Down syndrome, creates awareness opportunities for peers and friends, and provides support and networking for families. Come ready for fun and a crazy good time! Open to families with children of all ages and their friends.

Single Day Events for Children with Special Needs:

Sensory Sensitive Sundays
3 February 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. 
Chuck E. Cheese, 700 N. Milwaukee Ave., Vernon Hills
Enjoy games and food with reduced lighting and noise.  Staff will be trained and caring about autism and other special needs.

Fun Run and Obstacle Course for KIDS! 
3 February 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Partners for Progress Therapeutic Equestrian Center, 23525 W. Milton Rd., Wauconda
Free and open to the public. The obstacle course has over 30 obstacles to challenge all levels with strength, balance, and speed for ages 5-12. 

Special Needs Family Night
5 February 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Rockin’ Jump, 950 Busch Parkway, Buffalo Grove
A sensory-friendly environment for all guests. $15 for unlimited jump, chaperone’s jump for free. 

Special Night for Special Needs 
6  February 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Jump America, 880 Lakeside Drive, Gurnee
Enjoy jumping with low noise and little distraction. $8 per jumper, one parent jumps free. 

Sensory Storytime
7 February 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.
Zion-Benton Public Library, 2400 Gabriel Ave., Zion 
Families are invited to 30 minutes of stories, music or craft especially chosen for children ages 4-8 with developmental delays and sensory needs. 

Sensory Story Time*RR*
7 February 6:30 – 7:00 p.m.

Barrington Area Library, 505 N. Northwest Highway, Barrington 
All ages and their caregiver can enjoy books, music, and movement activities designed to engage the senses and build language and literacy skills. For children of all abilities. 

Sensory Friendly Movie
9 February 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Antioch Theatre, 378 Lake St., Antioch
Make plans for their sensory-friendly showing of The LEGO movie 2: The Second Part. The lights will be turned up and the sound turned down. Tickets are $6 and full refunds are provided until 10:30 a.m. 

SibShop*RR*
9 February 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

SibShops are for siblings aged 5 to teens. SibShops are a time for our siblings of special needs students to have fun and get to know other sibs. Fee is $7 and includes lunch. Registration is required. 

AMC Sensory Friendly Films 
9 & 23 February 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
AMC Theatres in Northbrook Court and South Barrington
AMC is proud to partner with the Autism Society to offer unique movie showings where the theaters turn the lights up, and turn the sound down, so you can get up and dance, walk, shout or sing! 

Sensory Playtime*RR*
9 February 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Warren Newport Public Library, 224 City W20, Gurnee 
Children with special needs and their caregivers are invited for sensory activities and play. Attendee must be between the ages of 4 years and 8 years. 

Sensory Storytime
21 February 10:30 – 11:15 a.m.
Zion-Benton Public Library, 2400 Gabriel Ave., Zion 
Families are invited to 30 minutes of stories, music or craft especially chosen for children ages 4-8 with developmental delays and sensory needs. 

Special Needs Night
21 February 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.
Bella’s Bouncies Indoor Inflatable Play center, 1600 N. Milwaukee Ave., #402, Lake Villa 
Join Bella’s for an experience tailored to you and your special needs child! Bella’s Bouncies works hard to provide a safe and fun environment for all children. Siblings welcome. Fee is $10 per child. 

Sensory Storytime
23 February 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Deerfield Public Library, 920 Waukegan Rd., Deerfield
Children of all abilities with their siblings and caregivers are welcome at an inclusive and interactive storytime filled with stories, songs, sensory play and socialization.
