Car Seats are one of the largest baby items that you purchase and use, usually until the end of it’s usefulness. Aside from the occasional trade in event what else can you do when you are stuck with a car seat that has either expired or been in an accident? Due to the need to dismantle and separate out all the different pieces contained in a car seat standard recycling centers don’t accept them. Local police and safety experts discourage leaving car seats on the curb or in the trash because of the chance that someone will take it and use it.
Thanks to a thoughtful reader we have learned that Lake County locals are lucky enough to have a option to recycle these expired, damaged or unwanted car seats without worry that they will end up being used or filling up a landfill. The Gurnee Police Department is one of the few places in the state, and the only place in Chicagoland that will accept car seats for recycling.
According to the the program organizer Wendy Mann safety is the biggest concern, the department doesn’t want these unsafe seats possibly being used. The department collects car seats 24 hours a day year round. Just bring your car seat into the station where they dismantle it and send the plastic to a company that melts it down and recycles it.
